Improved space weather observations and modeling for aviation radiation

In recent years there has been a growing interest from the aviation community for space weather radiation forecasts tailored to needs of industry. 2019 several centers began issuing advisories International Civil Aviation Organization alerting users enhancements in environment at flight levels. Due lack routine observations, modeling is required specify dose rates experienced by crew and passengers. While mature models exist, support key observational inputs further advancements are needed. Observational ground-based neutron monitor network must be financially supported research studies operations ensure real-time data available forecast actionable end user decision making. An improved understanding geomagnetic field reduce rate uncertainties regions close open/closed boundary, important flights such as those between continental US Europe which operate this region. Airborne measurements, crucial model validation improvement, lacking, particularly during solar energetic particle events. New measurement campaigns carried out progress situ atmospheric measurements made situational awareness. Furthermore, forecasting move nowcasts order meet customer requirements longer lead times planning mitigation.
